How to winterize your pool?

Why winterize your pool?

Winter is coming, so it is time towinterize your pool. This will make it easier for you to start it up again in the spring. You will also save on treatment products and avoid the proliferation of algae. Winterizing your pool will also protect your pool and its equipment from limescale deposits, damage to the walls or pipes due to frost.

When to winterize your pool?

To winterize your pool, it is recommended to wait until mid-October to mid-November, depending on the region, so that the water temperature is below 15°C. It is at this temperature that bacteria and micro-organisms no longer have the right conditions to develop. If you winterize your pool above this temperature, algae may proliferate.

How to winterize your pool?

There are two ways to protect your pool during the winter: passive winterization and active winterization.

Active winterization of your pool is especially recommended if you want to enjoy clear water all year round and make it easier to open your pool for the next spring.

If you opt for an active winterization, you do not stop the filtration pump and do water analysis regularly. Before winterizing your pool, you will need to thoroughly clean your filter in order to remove limestone and any bacteria that may have accumulated during the summer. During the winter, you will need to activate the filtration of your pool at least 2 hours per day to ensure that all the water passes through the filter in 2 days.

You should cover your pond with a cover or a winter cover DEL, like for example: Lake, Supergreen, Ivernéa, Ivernéa Plus... in order to limit the deposit of dirt and the proliferation of algae.

The second method of winterization is passive winterization. It is recommended if you want to forget about your pool during the winter or if you live in a cold region with strong winters. The objective of this wintering is to destroy microorganisms and remove all visible impurities to prevent them from developing.

Before winterizing your pool, you will need to perform a shock treatment of your pool water the day before or a few hours before winterizing your pool with a 24-hour continuous filtration. This will destroy the bacteria and/or algae present in your pool.

Next, you can clean your filter to remove and prevent scale build-up and partially drain your pond. The last step will be to turn off all your equipment and cover your pool with a winter cover. winter cover The last step will be to turn off all your equipment and cover your pool with a cover to limit the deposit of dirt and thus the formation of stains on the edges or the bottom of your pool and the proliferation of algae.
